Unfinished fic - Cobra Starship GSFOMGWTFBBQAU. [05 Dec 2008|12:04am]

stele3
I have a bit of writer's block -- more like "oh my god, I just finished writing this massive story that took up seven months of my life, I don't know what to dooooooo~ and the internet won't wooooooork~ for more than five seconds at a time, WOE IS ME" -- so I started poking through my bandom writing folder and came up with this: that old Cobra Starship GSF AU set in stereomer's fabulous mutant 'verse. I had totally forgotten about it! I never finished the damn thing, but here it is in all its half-assed glory.

Strange Things: AKA that mutant fic where Frank is the head of the underground, VickyT can stretch her limbs out to ridiculous lengths, Maja has super-hearing and super-headaches to go with them, Beckett is an empath, Alex is an everday human, and Gabe Saporta has the power of DEATH. Yes, DEATH. I have no idea where Travie and Ryland are. I think they're dead. Sorry 'bout that. I also profusely apologize for any and all characterizations in this fic, I'm sure they are all dreadful. This will probably not make any sense if you've never read stereomer's mutant AU.

Strange Things )

And that's all she wrote! As always, if somebody else wants to grab this, by all means! I will not be writing any more of this.

I posted about this earlier under flock (mostly because I am still wary of posting publicly about work in any kind of detail), and I am kind of already worn out with thinking and talking about it, but I got laid off today. My last day at work is 12/15. (thanks again to everyone who's already been so supportive. I really, truly appreciate it, more than I can say.)

I guess I will have lots of time to write and bake holiday cookies.

[info]fleurdeleo took me out for a tasty early dinner and I stuffed myself with nutella and banana crepes, and the food coma made me fairly sanguine. I am sure the real freak out is coming, but right now I am still in the "WTF just happened?" stage.

So my question (the first of many, I'm sure) is, those of you who have given up on having a landline and are only using cell phones, does that work for you? Especially while job hunting? I am trying to think of easy expenses to cut, and that is one of them, as the only reason I have a landline these days is for emergency internet purposes when the cable goes out, and I can give that up to save $40 a month (plus $24 on long distance I never use, and $19 on the back up dialup service I never use).

*

To cheer me up, [info]romanticalgirl wrote me an adorable Frankentim ficlet: Five Finger Discount, which totally nails their season 4 car conversation dynamic. ♥

I did post a story yesterday, because what I really needed to write was a coda to 4.10 featuring girl!Sam. *facepalm* Ah, well, when the going gets tough, I write girl!Sam fic:

Quidquid deliquisti
Supernatural; girl!Sam/Dean; au; spoilers through 4.10; adult; 1,620 words
Sam can't throw stones.

It was much pornier in my head, but it ended up being more about the conversation than the sex. Funny how that happens. I also finally gave in and made a beggars would ride tag, so all the stories that go with that/use that as a background are tagged now. *facepalm* I am still stubbornly refusing to call it a 'verse, or a series. You can read any of the stories as standalones, I think, though possibly they make more sense if you've read the first story, because then you've got all the background I'm working from. I still want to write random casefiles with girl!Sam, too. I don't even know, guys, but I've given up trying to figure it out. It makes me happy.

*

I love the song "Keep Yourself Warm" by Frightened Rabbit (it was playing when I started writing this entry). I feel there is a story to be written in thse lyrics: I'm drunk, I'm drunk / And you're probably on pills / If we've both got the same diseases / It's irrelevant, girl. Possibly a Kara story I will never write. or maybe angsty Max/Alec?

*

The Office spoilers )

Meanwhile, I went to my manage icons page and saw this: Currently uploaded: 145 out of 195. 195! Woo! I misread the earlier post and thought they were capping it all - permanent account + loyalty icons and everything - at 150, so that was a nice shock. I know what I will be doing at work tomorrow. *snerk*

Link dump, y'all! I'm allowed to say y'all, since I'm one quarter Texan on my father's side. [04 Dec 2008|12:02pm]

Via [info]debunkingwhite, the best thing since Stuff White People Like, Racism Is Over, celebrating all the ways racism is over, now that America has elected a Black president. Sample:
The new America has way more holidays, and way more fun!

Instead of everyone in the country being forced to take off Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving, workers and students are now allowed to take 10 personal cultural holidays per year. This can be applied to whenever their holidays fall without any penalty, pleading or paperwork. This gives flexibility to holidays whose dates change every year because they don’t subscribe to the Gregorian calendar. At schools, instead of the absent kid coming back and having to explain where he was the day before, he now hears “happy holiday!” on his return, because teachers take fifteen minutes to explain to their classes the special reason that Jacob or Jagdish is out of school for the day. The same happens in the workplace. Offices have taken to the practice with great enthusiasm, except they tend to celebrate the holiday a day early so they can surprise the person with cake at the staff meeting. Offices love any reason to surprise people with cake (or flan, gulab jamun or the occasional gifelte fish). Happy Diwali everyone!
I tried to verbally keyboard smush over this blog, which is harder than you might have thought.

Also via [info]debunkingwhite, this article on Plimoth Plantation, a historical site, which makes an effort to educate its visitors in more than one way:
It's a delicate balance between education and visitor relations, said Linda Coombs, associate director of the museum's Wampanoag Indigenous Program. Recently, she asked a 9-year-old girl who arrived in a homemade beaded costume to remove the garment before visiting the homesite, reducing the child to tears and upsetting her mother.

[...]

The awkward situation was salvaged by another cultural gesture, said Coombs. "I said to her, 'I understand you are giving up something that is important to you, so I'd like to give you a gift.' " She presented the girl with a beaded necklace from the gift shop to represent their coming to an understanding.
The comments are full of how the museum staff are totally meany-pants, though.

Hey, remember when [info]jamjar was part of the Amanda Palmer video-shoot? Palmer's label, Roadrunner, has refused to promote that video because she wouldn't let them cut or digitially re-sexify her belly. Which is, for all y'all's information, "fat." And while it's tempting to point out that if that's fat, I'm Abe Lincoln on a tricycle, the point is really more about the fact that women's bodies have to conform to be let out in public. If you want to support Palmer and not Roadrunner, buying music through her website gives her the largest cut. Shout-out to [info]kphoebe who introduced me to Oasis, Amanda Palmer's viciously funny and heartbreaking song about, among other things, sexual assault and abortion.

Emily the Strange ripped off from antique children's books! Actually, I seem to dimly remember an earlier Emily the Strange plagiarism controversy, does anyone know what I'm thinking of?

List of phrases google does and does not know. Guess which list "passenger side bidet" is on?

I find design competitions endlessly fascinating, since the job of designer appears to be "I come up with ideas: implementing them is your problem!" That said, the first looks neat, if possibly a problem for celiacs, but I can't believe no one is already producing the last.

WIPs Wordle Thing [04 Dec 2008|07:39pm]

Since I don't tend to have a whole lot of active WIPs (my stuff either gets written pretty much immediately or not at all. I don't have a whole lot of attention span) this was mostly an excercise of poking through the old files and seeing what comes out. More nostalgic than angsty.

This wordle is probably funnier than the fic managed to be )

Coloring the yuletart thing is taking forever. I've started yesterday and been at it for hours today, and I'm still not even half finished. How can this take so long? Granted, I'm layering for livelier colors so I have to go over every area many, many times, but still.

Also, I need to learn to sit more ergonomically or something. I have this unhealthy tendency to hunch over when I do details, because I'm very shortsighted and somehow it works better to look at details without glasses, but with my eyes that means the paper being less than two centimeters away from my nose tip. Obviously my back does not thank me for that.

Especially when I don't want to stop writing for even. One. Minute.

Things are going fairly well at casa del Jack and Te, though the economy is chewing up our city and spitting it out in moist little shreds.

Okay, so that was pretty disgusting. Sorry. The biggest news here is that I've been diagnosed with sleep apnea. Yay! No, seriously. It's a *diagnosis*. Of something *which can be treated*. With things that are *covered by my pathetic insurance*. Honestly, I'm thrilled. I've been told that I'll be expected to jump through hoops before I'll get my breathing machine, but I'm all set for that, man. Those sleep study appointments represent the first two good nights of sleep that I've had since Clinton was in office. The difference was *amazing*, both in terms of how rested I felt the next day and how much (little!) pain I was in. So do a little chair-dance for me, eh?

Now for the good stuff. I'm 90,000+ words into a story that I will not actually be posting, because it's just that dirty. Yes, *that* dirty. Instead, I'll make it available to people who solemnly swear they won't flame my ass or get triggered into cutting fleshy snowflakes out of their thighs or whatever. You'll be seeing a post along those lines when I'm done with the thing -- I'm gunning for pre-Christmas. 'tis the season! No, don't tell me you want it now. I'm still working to make the disclaimer/description as detailed as possible (without spoiling the fun), so that people can make informed decisions.

For the rest of you, I have a couple of much, much shorter stories that I hope to have edited *also* pre-Christmas. One's another missing scene from "A way so familiar," and the other is a porny one-shot involving Dick, Tim, and some spoilers.

Hope everything is well with y'all, and now, if you'll excuse me, I'll get back to digging myself to Hell, one orgasm at a time.

*smooch*

And now it's L&O with Katee, and I am fading fast. I was at work late and I didn't sleep well last night, and man, I am totally going to bed when this is over.

Second Circle: self-publishing? [03 Dec 2008|05:23pm]

stele3
[ mood | tired ]

Guys. Maybe it's just the exhaustion talking*, and maybe I'm highly susceptible to suggestion at the moment, but I'm wondering: do you guys think that self-publishing "The Second Circle" through something like Lulu Press is an option? Not in its current form, obviously: I am NOT gonna self-publish something with the names of Ryan Ross and Spencer Smith attached, thank you, not even under a nom-de-plume.

However, when I've got people who aren't even IN bandom dropping me comments to tell me how much they loved the story, well...that's something to look at, maybe? And I'm NGL, I need the money hella bad. Baby needs a new eye exam and prescription for glasses! And a computer whose battery doesn't fail in half an hour! And a car that isn't patched together from spare parts! And -- well, you get the picture.

But how to go about doing this? As I said, I wouldn't be comfortable self-publishing a story with the actual names of Ryan and Spencer attached -- I don't know if that's libel or legally wonky or anything, but I wouldn't personally be okay with doing that. Obviously it's a little different from other kinds of fanfiction because you're not actually using someone else's universe, but there still might be something that someone could legally take an exception to. Even in the limited space of self-publishing, there's a chance someone might see it when I really don't want them to. Plus I know there are people on my flist who have said they will read anything of mine besides RPS. On the other hand, maybe most of my flist -- and let's face it, you're my primary prospective customer base -- wouldn't be interested in the story unless it was specifically RPS and Bandom? I don't know.

What do you think? Here, let's have a poll!

Poll #2814 To publish or not to publish?

Yes, if all the names and details stayed the same and you didn't change anything.
4 (21.1%)

Yes, if you changed the names and did some more editing and made it more or less Original Fic that had nothing really to do with Bandom.
16 (84.2%)

Yes, if it was cheap enough. (Maybe name a price in the comments?)
6 (31.6%)

No, I'm not interested.
3 (15.8%)

No, I think this is a bad idea and you shouldn't do it.

a milestone of a sort [04 Dec 2008|12:50am]

[ mood | amused ]

After years in fandom I finally got my very first anti-slash flame. It kind of feels like a milestone, because I've never before been flamed for artwork that I recall (only trolled in discussion posts). Though I guess it's not surprising, considering how non-prolific I am. Also not actually drawing slash all that often.

Anyway the flame is such classic too, all capslock and typos with profanity accusing me of disrespecting the characters (as far as I can gather amidst the typos and incoherency). Though I guess I can't actually take full credit, as it was for my illustration of Lucy's Nightwing/Superman story Secrets. *waves* I'm almost tempted to let it out of the moderation queue (it came via my wordpress fanart blog) to commemorate the occasion, but not quite.

Guys,

I don't know if anyone would be interested or not but I've got our dining room set up for bid on EBay. It's a gorgeous Teak wood and is from back when we could still afford stuff like that. It's a Danish Modern set that we purchased from Contemporary Galleries about twenty years ago. I still love it but we could really use the money right now. I've always taken good care of it, the only thing I've ever polished it with is Scand-oil.

Our friend Steve is going to let us have his current table and chairs when he gets his new ones the first part of January. If it sells we'll just use our card table set until then. The set he's giving us is a little bigger than ours which will come in handy since it looks like we're becoming where everyone comes for holiday meals now that mom lives with us. It's pretty and looks kind of Arts and Crafts style. At the most my table only seats six people. He and Edie wanted a different style for when they finish re-modeling their house.

It's still hard to give this one up, though. I fell in love with it on sight all those years ago and that really hasn't changed now. Here it is if you'd like to take a look:

Dining room set

*hugs*

PS
That arrangement in the middle of my table? Mom did that for me a few years ago. Pretty, huh? She always made the most beautiful arrangements before her eyes got too bad. I've carefully saved all the ones she did for me. :)

My rats drive me crazy. You remember how two weeks ago Krümel broke his foot and I had to separate him into a small cage so he'd rest and not climb stuff? But for social contact I put the small cage inside the large one. He's still inside that small cage because the foot is still swollen as broken bones take some time to heal (especially as you can't stop him from walking on it completely). Of course Krümel is fairly unhappy in the small cage, and I only take him out briefly each day. And the other two don't quite get why he's behind bars either.

So now Ignatz has figured out how to open the wire door to the small cage, and broke into it. I heard suspicious squeaking and checked them. I know why my big cage has doors with actual locks rather than simple hooks.
